Memories...

It' been almost a week since we left BOston, eight days ago we had to say goodbye to all the wonderful friends we all made, say goodbye to this wonderful experience HMUN 2008 left to us. It marked a new chapter in our lives, getting to know how t debate, how to open with new people who live thousands of miles away from us, learn the current positions of countries around the world, (in my case the current position in Water Sanitation).

Special Summit in Water in the General Assembly was my committee and I was representing Honduras. We had the opportunity to meet wonderful delegates, who each individual had different cultures, beliefs, opinions and thoughts. In my personal I will always remember this amazing opportunity we had!

We had a blast in this trip, we want to give special thanks to our mum (Mr. Eames) and Auntie Jo (Mss. Graham)!!! We really miss last week's experience!!

Boston!!

Our Washington memories!...take a look..

point of privilege...motion to extend this past weekend!!

As we arrived today at school, after being 10 days away, it was clear how tired we all are as several of us told each other..."ya viste mis ojeras!"
Honestly, we did not expect to have so much work to do during the conference, however as i was telling my teacher earlier today...the sessions were scheduled to end at the earliest, 11.30 pm. and so it was hard to keep with all the work we had to do for school.
Definitely those days were hard, and we all ended exhausted but as i may say...i wouldn't change the past 10 days for nothing! it was an amazing experience...and i recommend it for all students who would like to join in for the future hmun trip!
Also, on behalve of all abc hmun'rs 08...we would like to thank our mum (Mr. Eames) and Auntie/ ATM Jo (Ms. Graham)...the best MUN advisors!! it wouldn't be possible to arrive on time to all of our activities for the day with the help of our map-reader expert (Mr.Eames), as one time he was not there for us and we struggled to get to a CVS we had just around the block! (ask Ms. Graham about it!).. and impossible to forget his punishments when we got out of control, so we named him, mum and what would've been of our stomachs without Ms. Graham, she was always ready with our money! as so we named her...our ATM! what i mean is...our friends! thank you for the incredible 10 days!
It was to hard to leave Boston, but we took with us a great experience, new friends, amazing times; which will be difficult to overcome.
We all surely miss the past days we experienced...it was an awesome week! Thank you to every delegate and both advisors... as it would've not been the same with one more or less in the group!

HMUN 2008, WE BELIEVE IT!

Mar-ha-ba!, Hello!, Hola!, Bonjour!, Aloha!

It is amazing to look back at these past few and wonderful days where 18 young students and 2 amazing teachers joint together to cooperate and consolidate the team of ABC's HMUN 2008.

Visiting and getting to know Washington's monuments, museums, streets and caring people was a great experience for all of us who visited the capital city of The United States for the first time. The orange and brown leaves decorated the clean and modern commercial streets whilst we barely cope with low temperatures and the fierce wind that craddle into our skin and bones (no matter how many cloth layers we had on), and although some were able to stand the cold season (Manz, Zam, Alberto), some of us were not and instead implored for a hot Starbucks, a warm store or a fast subway to Mr. Mom (Mr. Eames) while Auntie Jo made her budget calculations....prooving every time she could, she was the best ATM machine ever to exist.
Now at home, many seconds seem vague for the human mind is not able to retain a lot of things that we live throughout our lives, but some are for sure going to remain in our memories forever; as when some of us fell over whilst walking on the street, or the hilarious questions formulated by Charlie to Auntie Jo when some small or big doubts came to his mind, the presidential campaign to take place someday in the future, the marvellous shoes bought by Titi and Rodri and the money miracle that took place few days before we left; to a person who definetely has learnt to organize money when travelling (me).
If we could only say "Point of personal Privilege" to "Extend this trip" or "Extend the conference" I bet both motions would pass with 100% consent of all the marvelous, smart, outgoing and positive delegates that took part of this wonderful trip and that in the future....will take part of another one!
So what can I say about HMUN2008? Maybe that it has been the most wonderful adventure of my whole life, maybe that I will not forget it, maybe that I enjoyed meeting new and outgoing people that I can now call friends......But the truth is, that I can't express my feeling towards Mr. Mom, Auntie Jo, Titi, Charlie, Marce, Gaby's, etc. for what I feel goes beyond words and senses that will remain in my heart forever!
LO RECORDARE POR SIEMPRE!
I'LL REMEMEBER THIS FOREVER!
MABANSAK!
WE'LL BE SEEING US SOON WHEN SPEAKING OF HMUN2009....WHEN? WHERE? WHO?...IN CONSTRUCTION!

On HMUN 2008

The delegate for Mexico in the Organization of the American States is the leader of one of Boston's biggest Model United Nations group. The delegate for the United States of America has been to seventeen Model United Nations in the past thirty-six months. He's won best delegate fourteen times, half of those from the General Assembly: a committee of over 200 people. Everyone in every room seems to have a similar resume: months and months of preparation, piles and piles of Best Delegate certificates.

But in eighteen of those rooms sit eighteen shy looking students from a tiny little country in Central America. Eighteen students, most of whom have never participated in a Model United Nations before, and some who are still trying to figure out how exactly it all works, seconds before entering their first committee session. On the little name badge in each of those eighteen students' chests reads Academia Britanica Cuscatleca. That's us. And that's when you realize what a great, unbelievable thing we're doing.

Personally, I consider myself lucky. The committee I'm in is not only one of the smallest (35 people- about 165 less than the largest committee), but it's also a committee that I feel very passionate about (perhaps the only one in this MUN that I can honestly say that about). It's the Organization of the American States. In it is represented each nation in America, and I'm representing Honduras. Our topic is whether the current government of Cuba, which is communist and not democratic, should be allowed to be a part of the Organization.

The past three days have been some of the most exciting, frustrating and rewarding I can recall. After writing a resolution which seemed to have enough support to end the debate, we received a visit from "President Castro" and our entire proposal was proved to be unacceptable to Cuba. We had to start from scratch, and even worse- our block had divided. I found myself turned into one of the leaders of one block, debating against the United States and Mexico. I've mentioned both of them in my introduction...if you recall their achievements, you'll know it wasn't easy to step up to them. But I did, and in the end, Mexico and my block managed to negotiate a new resolution. Three hours ago, we voted on this resolution. It did not pass, but the goal, at least my personal one, had been achieved: I'd learned how to stand my ground even when it felt like it was me against the world. And I'd learned how to make the world listen to me. I even managed to convince half of it to join me.

Now I'm sitting in the Lobby of the Sheraton Boston hotel, as the first delegates begin to make their way to the HMUN Dance. I see Mexican delegates walking with delegates from New York, arguing about how McCain should have won the elections. I see a delegate from Greece wave to me from the other side of the room, pulling the "Peace and Love" sign after I confessed my..."lack of appreciation" for hippies (nothing personal, I swear). And I realize how much this weekend has helped us evolve and grow through the appreciation of the points of view of people who live on the other side of our planet, people with completely different ideologies, backgrounds, faiths and passions. After all, someone once said that once a mind is presented with a new idea, it's never the same again.

Tonight we'll dance, and tomorrow we'll have our last committee session. On Monday, eighteen new, improved minds will board a jet plane and head back home, back to El Salvador.

The "Actual" Debate

My committee the "Economic & Financial" is currently trying to solve the world food crisis. Issues such as Biofuels, Genetically altered crops, FTA (Free Trade Agreements) and many others have been said by different countries such as the members of the G8 which includes; France, Germany, Japan, China, UK, USA, Italy & Russia. they have taken control over the debate, as they are the countries which can provide monetary aid to underdeveloped countries such as Honduras which is the country that I am representing. As may position in the general assembly representing Honduras is not as simple because we do not want aid from an actual country so w have made a "Underdeveloped Countries Alliance" UCA which consist that we will only receive help from the NGO's such as Oxfam, Stop Hunger Now and Care, this will incentive people living on our countries to produce a more effective agricultural system by providing them money, and education on how to grow and manage their crops economically and with labour. we are currently supporting the South African government which has agreed on our proposal and has added clauses on their working papers to fit our needs. we are looking forward for a solution to be created soon, because the constant debate is becoming stressful.

harvard campus was great... we debated half a day on their campus and got a chance to take a private tour around the university by our guide: Roberto Melendez currently studying at MIT and ex- former ABC student.
although I said our day at harvard was great the night returning to the hotel wasn't pleasant as we were basically freezing therefore ATM "Mrs. Graham" and myself started running towards the train station to keep warm and also to get tickets for the metro... we are having a BLAST!!!
